Legislating based on one case is dangerous
The dangers of legislating in response to individual cases is being highlighted in WA, where horrific and callous injuries to a policeman - with the accused being acquitted at trial - have the government and opposition competing to see who can be 'toughest on crime' by introducing mandatory sentencing for offences against police. CLA member Brian Tennant's letter in The Australian on 18 March 09 points out we need to trust juries, who sit through and weigh up all the evidence before making their decision.
