Death is certain, but older people observe frailer elders closing on finality in nursing homes and think there should be a better way, and an ultimate choice, without penalty. Former ACT Speaker Greg Cornwell believes it's time for a national referendum.

The call, by Professor Ken Hillman, (3 January 2011) for a national living-will program to uphold the views of people seeking to die with dignity when at the end stage of their life, and endorsed by your editorial (4 January) must be supported by the medical profession if a patient`s choices are to be genuinely respected,
The issue of right to die has hit the front of Australia's metropolitan daily newspapers this silly season, with the Canberra Times featuring a call by Professor Ken Hillman to respect people's wishes. Also featured is the story of CLA member, Adele Stevens.
For decades opinion polls have shown that 80% of people would support the decision by Angie Belecciu* to end her life with dignity as she suffered from incurable, painful bone cancer. ("Angie`s choice" The Age 25/3).
CLA has launched a campaign to stop the Rudd Government imposting mandatoring internet filtering - censorship - on adult Australians' access to the internet. The campaign consists of a new website - http://www.censorfree.com.au/ - and a series of events, activities and media releases to be rolled out over the coming few months.
The government wants to stop children accessing pornography, a move CLA is entirely in agreement with. But the government has backed down on a promise to do so under an 'opt-in', voluntary system for parents, and instead plans to impose mandatory censorship, cutting adult Australians' access to information (and dramatically reducing internet speeds as a by-product).

If you want to read The Peaceful Pill Handbook, which provides information on assisted death and voluntary euthanasia, you are now too late. The man who has been unable to get David Hicks freed from Guantanamo Bay in five years, Attorney-General Philip Ruddock, moved with the speed of light to get the book banned, says Bill Rowlings of Civil Liberties Australia.
A top quality panel of Parliamentarians and subject experts met at the ANU in Canberra in late-2006 to discuss euthanasia. West Australian MHR Dr Carmen Lawrence chaired the forum, which featured speakers for an hour, then an hour's lively Q&A sessions.
Attorney-General Philip Ruddock has moved rapidly to demand that the Classification Review Board bans a book on euthanasia, the Peaceful Pill Handbook, even though the board OK'd the book just a month earlier, in December 2006. "This executive government banning sets a new low for censorship in Australia," CLA CEO Bill Rowlings says in a media release.
