CLA's policy on freedom of speech CLA believes freedom of speech is fundamental in a democratic society, which depends on free exchange of ideas and opinions and being able to communicate philosophies in an open and frank way. People must be free, in any medium, to engage in debate and challenge perceptions. CLA accepts that the right to free speech is not absolute, that it comes with responsibility attached, and that there may be a need to protect others from harm.

I am heartened by Mr Rowling’s statement that despite disliking Andrew Bolt he believes this case is bigger than that personal dislike. I hope Civil Liberties Australia will be pursuing this attack on free speech vigorously.

I for one actually think Andrew Bolt was right in what he said and that your allocation of him in the same category as fools and bigots shows that either you haven’t read much of his work or you have pre-determined that he is not the sort of character you could see yourself aligning to regardless of his argument and despite any logic he may present. I am confident I am not alone in this.

When both the government and our courts seek to silence the free speech of any group within our society we are in a dangerous place. When that group is the size of the ‘conservative group’ that align with Andrew Bolt’s views it smacks of an attempt at political engineering of our society.

CLA now have a dilemma. Do you really believe what you claim enough to defend the rights of those you dislike as robustly as you defend those whose views sit more comfortably with you?

Parts of Bolt's claims were totally unsupportable, because they were factually wrong. My article comments on Bolt's mien, not the quality of his argument – I'll keep my private counsel on that. But I support his right to freely express his opinions, as does CLA. Of course, the people he criticises should have the right of equal reply –

Bill Rowlings.

'Now, after the ruling in the Bolt case, free speech champions – even those who dislike and disagree with Andrew Bolt – should be speaking out…'

OK Bill, let's start 'speaking out…' e.g., in Melbourne a public rally on steps of Parliament(where the free speech corpse needs resuscitating)so name the date and time?
