Nauru is an island made up of bird poo which neighbouring nations such as Australia and New Zealand have found reason to exploit for trace elements missing in the soil in those countries to enable agricultural development with scant regard to the sociological consequences that followed for the native inhabitants. The reality now is that the we have a native population that has a sense of entitlement to income without effort and a corrupted government that has sacked the judiciary, has no rule of law, and can gaol anyone who dare criticise anything that takes place there, including the mis-treatment of the ‘boat people’. We have a local population, deeply suspicious and resentful of the potentially hard working newcomers who threaten the “Shangri La” status quo.
That a little boy refugee with a broken arm was sent off to India for treatment instead of coming home to us to be cared for, is an eye watering and cruel act that I for one want no part in; Thank you Tony, Julia and Bill.
