About Us

Civil Liberties Australia (CLA) is a national organisation with HQ in Australia's capital city, Canberra. We stand up for people's rights, and go in to bat for our civil liberties, for a fair go. We are non-party political, independent, and funded by members’ fees and donations (we receive no government funds).

CLA monitors police and security forces, the actions and inaction of politicians, and what government departments and agencies are up to. We review proposed legislation to make it better, trying to anticipate problems, rather than be reactive, and to provide answers to generic difficulties, rather than fighting one-off, individual cases like lawyers do.  Overall, Civil Liberties Australia aims to keep Australia the free and open society it has traditionally been, where you can be yourself without undue interference from 'authority'.  Please join us as a member

Members receive a monthly newsletter, CLArion, with coverage of main initiatives and happenings for the period, and the opportunity to choose to get involved with any aspect of the organisation’s work. Submissions, campaigns, member interaction and general meetings take place electronically. The quick-turnover website –  – carries articles of general interest in the field of liberties, rights, freedoms and responsibilities.  We encourage school and particularly uni students to join (at a reduced rate), and we help uni students with a formal internship program.
