HR bench study under way; public consultation to follow

Attorney-General Robert McClelland disclosed in a meeting with CLA today that officers of the Human Rights branch in the Attorney-General’s Department were undertaking a ‘stocktake’ of existing national legislation and processes on human rights (including Acts in the ACT and Victoria, and completed community consultations in WA and Tasmania, each of which recommended bringing in a charter of rights and responsibiliteis). Once the stocktake was done, there was likely to be a discussion paper in the July-September period, and public consultation would follow, he said.
