Police hunker in their bunker

Police hunker in their bunker

I have always been troubled by the way the WA Police and the state’s criminal justice system deal with cases where there is controversy.

They basically hunker in their bunker refusing to move from their position and hope the storm will blow over.  The Mallard, Button and Beamish cases immediately come to mind.

Here, we have an unsolved murder and the findings of a judge and comments of a senior QC showing that the investigations of the WA Police were unsatisfactory to say the least.  Yet the WA Police are in the bunker, and not instigating a cold case review and not prepared to comment on the case.

The longer the WA Police delay starting a cold case review, the colder the trail will go. Time is the essence when you are dealing with criminal cases.  And on top of this, the Police Commissioner is refusing to comment on the case because of “other court actions, both civil and criminal”.  Yet QC David Edwardson says: “To say no comments can be made because of Lloyd Rayney’s defamation case, or any other charges he might be facing, is ridiculous.”

All West Australian want this murder case solved.  The police must be proactive.  I call upon the Police Commissioner to justify to the WA community why he is not prepared to instigate a cold case review and comment immediately on the Corryn Rayney case.
