The recent death of yet another individual in detention highlights again the cruelty of our refugee system under which some people have been held in prison for over 11 years. We have become desensitised to the inhumanity and regularity of our abuse of innocent people who have come to us seeking refuge. To add to our glorious record, we had two Australian-born children trapped in prison on Christmas Island for yet another Christmas and we have hundreds of refugees staring down the barrel of another year in prison for doing nothing other than pleading with us for help.
