Government should remove all discrimination

CLA welcomes the Rudd Government’s planned removal of discrimination against same-sex couples…but it should be consistent, and remove all discrimination, including over ceremonies and registrations, and against Aboriginal Australians in the Northern Territory. Government-endorsed discrimination is discrimination, no matter what colour or sex it comes in, CLA says.

Same sex couples

Civil Liberties Australia comments on the Rudd Government’s ‘same sex’ announcements…

CLA welcomes removing discrimination from the laws of Australia for same-sex couples.

We believe the new laws will need close monitoring, to make sure they do pick up all cases of same sex discrimination.

For example, if the Australian Government wants to remove all discrimination against same sex couples, it would allow couples exactly the same recognitions, in legal ceremonies or registrations, that are available to heterosexual couples.

CLA suggests that, as well, that the Rudd Govt should stay true to its new anti-discriminatory principles, and remove negative discrimination against Indigenous people under emergency NT legislation.

Government-endorsed discrimination is discrimination, no matter what colour or sex it comes in.
