The US prison-legal system is twice as efficient as Australia’s, stats show.

The American criminal justice system holds almost 2.3 million people in 1833 state prisons, 110 federal prisons, 1772 juvenile correctional facilities, 3134 local jails, 218 immigration detention facilities, and 80 Indian Country jails as well as in military prisons, civil commitment centres, state psychiatric hospitals, and prisons in the US territories https://tinyurl.com/y8f28klm

But the US system is much more efficient than Australia’s. Only 22.5% of those held in detention in America are on remand or in pre-trial detention. In Australia, the equivalent figure is 33%. This means Australia is about 50% less efficient in its legal procedures than the USA. https://tinyurl.com/yx9nvt8y
