I do it because I understand the need for Australia to be part of the global community. I can see that by supporting our allies in Afghanistan we forge closer ties with other nation states that support democratic liberal (small “l”) principles and freedoms.
I also go to Afghanistan because I would like to see women freed from ignorance and domination. They should be free to obtain education and all of the other benefits of liberal democracy. I believe that Islam is an honourable faith for good and should be respected and practised as it was intended and not corrupted for self-interest and gain by warlords and dictators.
And I go to look out for my mates for whom I would die if I was called on to do so.
