Time to learn tolerance

Editor, The Age: Sir, At Christmas, it is understandable that in Australia, due to our history since settlement, great emphasis is given to the Christian religion throughout the land.

However, considering the composition of today`s Australians with many being adherents of other religions (along with a large minority of non-believers), it is essential for developing national cohesion that the key elements of non-Christian religious beliefs be understood and featured in our media and in schools.

In particular, a general knowledge of the Islamic religion will enable us to appreciate the likely divisive issues that could arise at home as more Muslims settle here, and mindfully respect the sensitivities of people in Afghanistan and Iraq wherein members of our military forces are engaged in fierce combat with terrorists operating under the banner of Islam.
